Rural Matters: Vice Presidential Nominees Through Farm Focus
Nearly a month ago, the Republican Party formally nominated their candidates for President and Vice President, and just this past week in Chicago the Democratic Party also selected their nominees. While many are familiar with those names at the top of the ticket, the individuals slated at VP for this cycle are likely new names for most. In this week’s Rural Matters, we are going to look at the backgrounds of each of the VP nominees. Governor Tim Walz
Background: Tim Walz served from 2007 to 2019, representing Minnesota’s rural 1st congressional district. He was a member of the House Agriculture Committee, where he served on the House Agriculture Forestry Subcommittee and the House Agriculture Commodity Markets, Digital Assets, and Rural Development Subcommittee. Since 2019, Walz has served as Governor of the State of Minnesota.Ag Policy Contributions:
- Farm Bills: Played a role in drafting and passing the 2008, 2014, and 2018 farm bills
- Renewable Fuels: Advocated for renewable fuels and a strong safety net for farmers
- Conservation Programs: Introduced legislation to protect critical habitats and improve soil health
- Support for New Farmers: Promoted policies to improve opportunities for new and beginning farmers, including veterans transitioning to agriculture
- Trade Policies: Supported a deal with South Korea in 2011 and opposed legislation that would have made it easier to seal trade deals
Senator J.D. Vance
Background: J.D. Vance entered politics and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022, representing Ohio. He had worked as a legislative staffer on the hill during college and after law school briefly. During his time on the hill, he’s been a vocal advocate for rural and agricultural communities.Ag Policy Contributions:
- Regulatory Opposition: Opposed regulations that he views as detrimental to agricultural productivity, arguing for a more farmer-friendly regulatory environment
- Support for Farmers: Advocated for policies that support traditional farming practices and rural development
- Trade Policies: Emphasized the importance of fair-trade practices that benefit American farmers
- Rural Development: Support initiatives aimed at revitalizing rural areas, focusing on economic development and infrastructure improvements to enhance the quality of life
The November election is important, with critical and contested races up and down the ballot. It is important that you educate yourself on the candidates, make an informed choice, and then get out to vote in-person on November 5th or request an absentee ballot at least 15 days before the election.
